چکیده

Evidence has recently been presented for the natural occurrence of S-methylcysteine in kidney bean seeds (2) and in Neurospora crassa (3). The sulfoxide of S-methylcysteine has also been shown to occur in relatively high concentrations in the nonprotein nitrogen fraction of turnips, cabbage, and several other crucifers (4, 5). It is also of interest that the peptide, y-glutamyl-Smethylcysteine, has been isolated from the seeds of various leguminous plants (6, 7). S-Methylcysteine can be degraded by various bacteria (8, 9), and synthesized by molds (3) and yeast extracts (10). The amino acid has not as yet been demonstrated as a naturally occurring compound in mammalian tissues, and it was found to be ineffective in restoring growth of rats (11) and rabbits (13) on a cystine-deficient diet. On the other hand, increases in total sulfate excretion have been noted when Smethylcysteine was fed to dogs (12) and rabbits (13). In view of the widespread occurrence of X-methylcysteine in plants, the possibility exists that S-methylcysteine may play an important role in the normal metabolic processes of plant and also animal tissues. The present investigation is concerned with determining the extent of oxidation of the methyl group to carbon dioxide and the degree of incorporation of the methyl carbon into tissue choline and creatine in the intact rat.

Metabolomic profiling and stable isotope labelling of Trichomonas vaginalis and Tritrichomonas foetus reveal major differences in amino acid metabolism including the production of 2-hydroxyisocaproic acid, cystathionine and S-methylcysteine

Trichomonas vaginalis and Tritrichomonas foetus are pathogens that parasitise, respectively, human and bovine urogenital tracts causing disease. Using LC-MS, reference metabolomic profiles were obtained for both species and stable isotope labelling with D-[U-13C6] glucose was used to analyse central carbon metabolism. This facilitated a comparison of the metabolic pathways of T. vaginalis and T...

Transcriptome Profiling Identifies Candidate Genes Associated with the Accumulation of Distinct Sulfur γ-Glutamyl Dipeptides in Phaseolus vulgaris and Vigna mungo Seeds

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and black gram (Vigna mungo) accumulate γ-Glutamyl-S-methylcysteine and γ-Glutamyl-methionine in seed, respectively. Transcripts were profiled by 454 pyrosequencing data at a similar developmental stage coinciding with the beginning of the accumulation of these metabolites. Expressed sequence tags were assembled into Unigenes, which were assigned to specific gen...

Changes in Biochemical Parameters Related to Lipid Metabolism Following Titanium Treatment in Rat

Titanium salts are widely used in pharmacy and industry as intensely white permanent pigment with good covering power in paints , paper , toothpaste , plastics and food dye s. This ion is a redox-active transition metal and may cause oxidative damages to lipids, proteins and DNA molecules. In spite of abundant literature, questions about the side effects of titanium ions...

The effect of chronic psychological stress on carbohydrate metabolism in rat

Several studies have shown that stress has major effects on metabolism. There is also some evidence indicating that stress may induce diabetes mellitus. The present study has investigated the role of chronic psychological stress on carbohydrate metabolism in male Wistar rats (250 ± 50 g). Animals were divided into control and test groups (n = 8/group). Blood samples were obtained by tail snippi...

N-acetylcysteine and S-methylcysteine inhibit MeIQx rat hepatocarcinogenesis in the post-initiation stage.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and S-methylcysteine (SMC), water soluble organosulfur compounds contained in garlic, were evaluated for chemoprevention of hepatocarcinogenesis after 2-amino-3,8-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoxaline (MeIQx) initiation in rats. Intergastric treatment with NAC or SMC five times a week resulted in decreased numbers and areas of preneoplastic, glutathione S-transferase placenta...
